About Discover Vietnam

A Love Letter to Vietnam

I'm Scott Murray — an American who first set foot in Vietnam in 2003 and never stopped coming back. What started as a week-long trip turned into 20+ years of exploration across the country, from Hanoi's Old Quarter to the Mekong Delta's floating markets. 40+ countries of travel, but Vietnam has always been the first love. This is how two decades of obsessive trip planning became the travel guide I wished existed.

Scott · American · First passport: 2002 · First Vietnam trip: 2003

Travel has always been my escape from the rat race — and honestly, I enjoy the planning almost as much as being there. Researching destinations, mapping routes, finding that perfect street food stall. It started with a trip to Southeast Asia in 2003. One of my best friends told me I needed to see Vietnam for myself. I'd barely left the country. I landed in Hanoi — the chaos of the Old Quarter, the motorbikes, the pho on every corner — and Vietnam addiction began.

Since then I've made 20+ trips across the entire country — Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, Sapa, Phu Quoc, and dozens more. I've watched Vietnam transform from a backpacker secret to a world-class destination while still keeping its soul. I've taken the Reunification Express from Hanoi to Saigon. I've watched Grab replace the taxis that quoted me five times the real fare.

I'm not a travel blogger. I work in healthcare IT. But Vietnam keeps pulling me back, and I finally decided to put everything I've learned into something useful — a site with real local knowledge, honest prices, video content from the places I've actually been, and an AI trip planner that builds itineraries from 20+ years of real experience. It's the resource I talked about building years ago. It just took this long to figure out how.

Our Story

23 Years in the Making

2003
First Landing: Hanoi

The first trip. Touching down at Noi Bai Airport, the wall of humidity, the chaos of motorbikes, and a bowl of pho that changed everything. Hanoi's Old Quarter before the craft beer scene. Just narrow streets, ancient temples, and a realization: Vietnam is unlike anywhere on Earth. The addiction begins.

2005
Ha Long Bay & the Central Coast

Second trip. Ha Long Bay on an overnight junk boat, then south to Hoi An and Hue. The Imperial Citadel at sunrise, tailor shops in Hoi An's lantern-lit streets, and the best banh mi in the world. The obsession deepens.

2006–18
Deeper Into the Country

Da Nang, Nha Trang, Dalat, Sapa, the Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha. Each trip goes further from the tourist trail. Local friends open doors no guidebook can — hidden restaurants, real prices, off-the-map villages. 40+ countries of travel, but Vietnam is always the first love.

2019–24
Capturing the Country

I start documenting everything — video from rice terraces, motorbike routes, street food markets, and coastal roads. The idea crystallizes: why does no Vietnam travel site show you what these places actually look and feel like? The dream of a proper travel resource takes shape.

2025
Discover Vietnam Launches

The site I dreamed about building for years finally becomes real — with video content, an AI trip planner, and local connections powering every recommendation. Not a side hustle with recycled content. A real guide built by someone who loves this country.

What You'll Never Find Here

We built this site because we got tired of Vietnam travel content that's secretly a press trip recap or a sponsored hotel review dressed up as honest advice. We don't want you to experience the same challenges we did — early on and even recently. Discover Vietnam exists because we wanted the resource we wished we had back in 2003.

If we recommend it, we've been there. If we list a price, we've paid it. If we tell you to skip something, we've wasted our own money there first. This is a truthful, fact-based site — and we want you to feel like you've experienced it with us.
